The Cholmondeley Parents' Group
The Parents' support and education Groups meet once a week during term time. They enable parents to discuss and explore parenting issues with the help of a qualified social worker. The ability to discuss their parenting challenges with others experiencing similar issues allows parents to gain confidence and learn the skills and tools to respond positively to the challenges they face. Thus improving the family's situation.
Unlike many parenting groups, the curriculum is flexible enough to encompass issues that are worked out in advance or pertinant to the parents on the day of the meeting as well as providing a learning process. That means you can deal with important issues quickly before they become insurmountable.
The Parents' Group is aimed at parents who:
- Need advice / behaviour management skills to help manage their children.
- Are seeking new skills and ways to work positively with their children.
- Want access to current information and ideas on child care.
- Some who are struggling to cope day to day.
- Those who have few supports in the community.
- Want an opportunity to share experiences with other parents, so they may learn what happens in other families.
Each group has access to the collective expertise of the staff at Cholmondeley.
The timetable is:
- Wednesdays 10.30am to 12.30pm – 160 Rose Street, Lower Cashmere.
- Thursdays 10.00am to 12.00pm – Wainoni/Aranui Family Centre, 31 Hampshire Street.
- Tuesday mornings 10.30am to 12.30pm – 160 Rose Street, Lower Cashmere.

Purpose of the Parents' Group
1. Support parents by affirming their parenting role and identifying the difficulties that abound in carrying out day to day functioning
2. Provide an opportunity to share parenting experiences and to learn from each other, as well as from the group facilitator.
3. Each group works out the areas its members need to explore. These are then researched by the leaders.
4. Join in a learning experience in relation to parenting and home management, much of which will arise from what you want to know. Home visits are arranged, & help given to establish boundaries & routines. Support is given in the home.
