From hands on animal encounters to a trip to the theatre, it’s been a season to remember! The children, full of energy and warmth, made me feel instantly welcome.” Eden came to the Centre during a time of deep hardship. With her mother unwell and her family facing real danger, she and her five siblings were living in fear and uncertainty. “Before Cholmondeley, life was incredibly hard. But the Centre became our safe place. A place where, for the first time in a long time, we could breathe.” Cholmondeley was more than just shelter, it was a space of stability and genuine care. Through the simple rhythms of daily life, moments of play and quiet connection, Eden began to rebuild her trust in others, and herself. “What touched me most was the resilience of the children, and the dedication of the team. Even though I wasn’t in my own home, I felt at home. The warmth, patience, and love they offered made a lasting impact on me.” From jetty walks to ringing the school bell, the small, joyful details are what remain etched in Eden’s memory. But it’s the deeper sense of belonging that truly shaped her. “Cholmondeley made me the woman I am today. It taught me resilience, responsibility, and self-worth. I learned to manage my emotions, to believe in myself, and to trust again.” Now, with the gift of hindsight and growth, Eden has a message for families who may be considering support: “To any parent or caregiver who is struggling, do not hesitate. Your tamariki will be in great hands. And to any young person who finds themselves at Cholmondeley: there is no shame in seeking help. We have had the intermediate boys and girls stay – a 3 night stay designed for those between the ages of 10-12years. Each stay is thoughtfully planned offering age-appropriate experiences and opportunities to try new activities. During the boys stay they had the chance to design their own caps. We welcomed a talented local artist from Fantom Street Made Clothing who guided the children in designing and painting their own caps, a wearable piece of art they were so proud to take home. The girls staying with us were treated to a very special experience with member of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. They watched a performance and had the opportunity to have a turn at playing a few instruments. Thanks to all the time, energy and skill from Adam and his team at Kotahi Engineering Studio, Jeremy - Isaac Construction, Mike - Canterbury Landscape Supplies, Peter - Fulton Hogan - Tim - Planz Consultants and George Lockyer. With resource consent now approved, work began earlier this month on our new bike pump track. This track connects to the existing concrete path that runs down the hill and weaves through the trees, creating an exciting new space for our tamariki to explore and enjoy. Bike track project lead, Cam from Dirt Trail Building, has made the most of the recent good weather and has been busy on site completing the track. Also included in this first stage is the installation of brand-new swings and seesaws, scheduled for early August. We are working toward our fundraising goal for Stage 2: a basketball half hour and an exciting new flying fox! We have recently been generously granted from a trust (wishing to remain anonymous) half the funds needed to install the flying fox. This opens up a unique opportunity for a supporter to fund the remaining required and receive 100% of the naming rights. Kerry Turner received an award at the Volunteer Canterbury Recognition Awards. Kerry has been such a great support to the centre, this year alone he has helped build the Gaga Pit and our new centenary garden. Their mother was unwell and needed to remain in hospital, so Cholmondeley became a place of care. Though many years have passed, Frances recently shared a heartfelt reflection with us. While she doesn’t remember every detail, the memories she does have are vivid. She recalls arriving at Cholmondeley and being struck by the size of the large, white two-storey house - both exciting and a little overwhelming for two young girls. They were shown to their bedroom, where the beds were placed side by side. With childlike confidence, she told staff she would take the longer bed because she was taller than Sarah. One of her strongest memories is of the teacher at the time, a tall, broad man with fair hair and a gentle, kind nature. His warm smile and calm presence made her feel safe and cared for. She remembers skipping happily off to school each day, while Sarah trailed behind more reluctantly. Although their stay was brief, the feeling of kindness left a lasting impression. Decades later, the memory of Cholmondeley remains a happy one - a testament to the power of care, connection, and the small moments that matter most. Thanks to the generous support of the DOC Motukārara Conservation Nursery, tamariki have repotted native seedlings, nurtured them in our on-site shade house, and recently planted them at Black Point near Church Bay. Their efforts haven’t stopped there. The children have also been playing an active role in predator control at Living Springs. They’ve set up and maintained their own trapline along the gateway perimeter, acting as a first line of defence to help protect native species from predators like stoats, rats, mice, and possums. Through hands-on learning, tamariki have gained skills in setting and checking traps, rebaiting, and recording their findings. It’s been incredible to see their pride and sense of responsibility grow as they see the tangible impact their mahi is having on local biodiversity. At 94 years young, Noel brought his signature spark and cheeky sense of humour during a cuppa and tour with our Fundraising and Events Support team member, Sarah Jamieson. A true community champion, Noel co-founded Halswell United Football Club in 1964 and remains a regular on the sidelines to this day. The event sold out within days of tickets going live and it was a beautiful day. Thank you Meadowbank Homestead for supporting Cholmondeley In March, Navy Lieutenant Commander Office Tim Johns got on his bike and competed in the Sounds to Sounds to raise awareness and funds for Cholmondeley. He had a personal challenge to complete the route quickly as his wife was due to give birth later in the month. Tim described the ride as “epic” from day one. He was one of only two riders to reach Molesworth Station by midnight, pushing through rain and wind the next day to arrive in Hanmer. From there, he continued solo, navigating rough trails, big climbs like Mackenzie Pass and Omarama Saddle, and long days through Tekapo, Alexandra, and into Ben Nevis Station. A mechanical on his bike slowed his pace near the end, and by Te Anau, with limited supplies and exhaustion setting in, he made the tough call to finish there. His Sounds to Sounds became Sounds to Lake, a proud effort nonetheless. This was when New Zealand was looking for European workers to start a new life, fresh from the European war and Indonesian conflict. My parents worked hard to build a new life and had a few Dutch friends that they shared their experiences with, and that provided a link to their past, and kept their culture alive for them. As so many Dutch couples did in the day they saved their money and moved into town where they started a small mobile fruit and vegetable business, working 6 days a week starting early and finishing late. So when my mother fell ill and needed hospital care it became clear that my father would not be able to look after my brother and I. Fortunately my older brother was cared for by friends but as I was quite young, 3 or 4 years of age (I think), I was sent to Cholmondeley Children's home. It must have been quite a relief for my parents to have a facility that could cope with such a young child. Being that young, my memories are scarce though a favourite one is that of riding a 3 wheeled trike on the veranda of the original building. My impression as an adult is that I was well cared for and had a largely enjoyable experience. I think my stay was maybe 8 weeks or so, but I must have felt safe and secure as when my mother was able to leave hospital and our family was re united again, we managed to carry on fairly much as before, although my mother was very amused at being called 'Nurse' for some time. I have always known of my stay at Cholmondeley and I am proud to say that I was a "Cholmondeley Child" and now through that link and the kindness that was shown, I have come back to support the home that supported my family all those years ago. One of seven children in her family, Charlotte was struggling with the problems at home, so her mum sent her to Cholmondeley for respite. Charlotte has fond memories of her time at the Centre, and recalls getting potato chips as rewards from the teacher, and the children all eating together in the dining room. But she also got up to some mischief. It was this mischief that led to a turning point in her life. After a 'big incident', a staff member pulled Charlotte aside and told her, "whatever you do from here you choose which path you want to take, it's up to you." This conversation stayed with her, "I ruminated on it for a good couple of years and then when I left high school I always kept that in the back of my mind like, 'this is my choice what I do now,'" Charlotte said. She studied, worked hard, and moved up the ranks in the social work and disability sector. Now Charlotte has a top management role training staff, advocating for, and supporting people living with disabilities. "My mum left my dad with six children, the youngest was nine months old and the oldest was seven years old," Tracie said. She described her father as a "proud man" who would never ask for help, but knew life must have been hard for him. "My dad had decisions to make. It was either foster us all out or get some respite for himself. He chose that [respite at Cholmondeley] because he wanted to keep us all together." If Tracie and her siblings had not stayed at Cholmondeley, her childhood could have turned out very differently, "we would have been fostered out and maybe lost in the system," she said. In the 1970s, Tracie and her siblings stayed at Cholmondeley for a few weeks at a time. She loved the school, the playground, the free play time, and remembered it as a "really peaceful, lovely time," in her childhood. One of her most vivid memories involved playing in 'the trench', a big crack in the ground at Cholmondeley they were told was from an earthquake. She said she gets warm and fuzzy feelings whenever she thinks of Cholmondeley, "we would get hugs and hot meals and warm beds which we didn’t have at home." Jani-King bought 100 tickets from Cholmondeley and gave them out to staff as Christmas presents. The lucky Jani-King employee said he was, "overwhelmed with gratitude and humbled" by the win, and incredibly thankful for both the prize and the work Cholmondeley does in the community. He also shared a personal connection to Cholmondeley's mission - over many years, he and his wife had fostered young children in need of loving homes.
