July 2025
This winter has been one to remember at Cholmondeley. Our tamariki have been busy exploring, learning, and simply enjoying being kids. From feeding animals at Arion Farm with vegetables grown in our own garden to the excitement of seeing The SpongeBob Musical at the new Court Theatre, the season has been full of moments that spark joy and confidence.
Earlier this month, our team spent time at Rāpaki Marae as part of our ongoing professional development. Stepping away from our usual routines gave us the space to learn new things, strengthen our connections through team-building, share more about ourselves, and reflect on what supports us to do our best work. Days like these are invaluable for strengthening our team culture, building shared understanding, and refocusing on the values that guide our work. A big thanks to Ngāti Wheke for hosting us and making us feel so welcome in their beautiful space.
In this issue we take time to celebrate some of the people who walk alongside us, like Jason Dellaca and the team at Brandhouse. Jason’s family has had a long-standing connection with Cholmondeley, and through Brandhouse, that support continues today – helping us grow stronger while staying true to who we are.
One of the most powerful reminders of our impact came from Eden Donaldson who generously shared her story in this issue. Her words reflect something we hear often but never take for granted, that Cholmondeley can be a turning point in a child’s life.
As we continue to celebrate our centenary year, I want to thank you for being part of this journey. Your support, in ways big and small, helps create the sense of home and belonging that lies at the heart of everything we do.
Kind regards,
Darel Hall

Centre Update
The winter school holidays were packed with exciting experiences and new adventures for the children staying at Cholmondeley. From hands on animal encounters to a trip to the theatre, it’s been a season to remember!
One of the highlights was a visit to Arion Farm Education Park, where the children brought along vegetables from our own garden to feed the cows, goats, and pigs. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about different animals.
Another special outing was attending The SpongeBob Musical at the brand-new Court Theatre auditorium. This magical experience was made possible thanks to the generosity of PwC, who kindly donated tickets so our children could enjoy the show. We’re so grateful for your support, thank you!
Paws and Reflect: The Joy Liza Brings
Liza, along with her beloved therapy dogs Sandy and Norah, has been visiting Cholmondeley every week for the past five years. Her visits are always a highlight for the children, who absolutely love spending time with her and the dogs. While at the Centre, the children spend time walking, brushing, and giving treats to the dogs. These simple yet meaningful activities help nurture empathy, patience, and a gentle, respectful way of interacting with another living being.
Thank you so much, Liza, for everything you do, your visits mean the world to the kids and make such a difference every week.
Bottling the Cholmondeley spirit: Jason Dellaca and Brandhouse
Jason Dellaca’s entrepreneurial journey began with a humble idea: importing Sahara nuts, a popular bar snack from the UK and selling them to New Zealand pubs. What started as a side hustle quickly became a full-time venture.
Fast forward to today, and Jason is the Managing Director of Brandhouse, a family-owned liquor sales and distribution company based in Christchurch. Brandhouse is now a significant player in New Zealand’s alcohol industry, importing and producing premium wines, spirits, and even launching 0% alcohol products. They own and operate a brewery, distillery, and vineyard, alongside exclusive distribution of global brands.
Beyond business, Jason has a deep sense of community and a strong commitment to giving back. His connection to Cholmondeley is both personal and generational. His father, Kerry Dellaca, has long been a cornerstone of the Centre’s governance and fundraising efforts, including leading the rebuild following the Christchurch earthquakes. Growing up around this legacy of service, Jason developed a lasting appreciation for Cholmondeley’s mission and the vital role it plays in supporting local families.
“I’ve kind of grown up knowing about Cholmondeley and having an affinity for it,” Jason shared. “Initially, we supported the golf tournaments with prizes, and it just evolved from there.”
From that early involvement, Brandhouse has become a consistent supporter, particularly through events like Little Gems. It’s never just a transactional sponsorship. As Jason puts it, “It’s always: what else can we do to help?”
One of his most poignant reflections comes from listening to former Cholmondeley children at events. “There are people you’d never guess who say Cholmondeley was a turning point in their lives. That kind of stuff really hits home.”
As Cholmondeley celebrates its 100th year, it’s supporters like Jason and the Brandhouse team who help ensure the next hundred are just as impactful.
We're pleased to announce that we've got a special centenary collaboration in the works with Brandhouse that will be unveiled at Little Gems (more event info including ticket details can be found below).
Alumni Story:
Eden Donaldson – “Cholmondeley Will Forever Be Home”
For Eden Donaldson, walking through the doors of Cholmondeley Children’s Centre wasn’t just a change of scenery, it was the beginning of healing.
“Spending time at Cholmondeley was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life,” Eden reflects. “From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with bright smiles and curious eyes. The children, full of energy and warmth, made me feel instantly welcome.”
Eden came to the Centre during a time of deep hardship. With her mother unwell and her family facing real danger, she and her five siblings were living in fear and uncertainty.
“Before Cholmondeley, life was incredibly hard. But the Centre became our safe place. A place where, for the first time in a long time, we could breathe.”
Cholmondeley was more than just shelter, it was a space of stability and genuine care. Through the simple rhythms of daily life, moments of play and quiet connection, Eden began to rebuild her trust in others, and herself.
“What touched me most was the resilience of the children, and the dedication of the team. Even though I wasn’t in my own home, I felt at home. The warmth, patience, and love they offered made a lasting impact on me.”
From jetty walks to ringing the school bell, the small, joyful details are what remain etched in Eden’s memory. But it’s the deeper sense of belonging that truly shaped her.
“Cholmondeley made me the woman I am today. It taught me resilience, responsibility, and self-worth. I learned to manage my emotions, to believe in myself, and to trust again.”
Now, with the gift of hindsight and growth, Eden has a message for families who may be considering support:
“To any parent or caregiver who is struggling, do not hesitate. Your tamariki will be in great hands. And to any young person who finds themselves at Cholmondeley: there is no shame in seeking help. There is strength in it.”
Eden’s journey reminds us that while Cholmondeley is a physical place, it’s also a feeling: a foundation built on care, connection, and aroha.
“Cholmondeley was a turning point. A place where I learned I mattered. Thank you, Cholmondeley, for being a guiding light during a dark time. You will forever be home.”
