March 2026

March has been another action-packed month at Cholmondeley, with tamariki enjoying a wide range of activities.

We've embraced the great outdoors with tamariki enjoying hikes in the hills and ropes courses, and visits from Liza and her therapy dogs, bringing smiles and furry cuddles all around. We also got out into nature with visits to the Botanic Gardens and local farms, giving tamariki hands-on experiences in the environment. Back at the Centre, weaving tukutuku panels gave tamariki the chance to learn about Māori art and culture.

Some tamariki took in the views on the Christchurch Gondola, while others visited Lyttelton Skate Park and explored the historic Lyttelton Gaol. There were refreshing dips at the Governor’s Bay Pool and beach trips to Scarborough, where tamariki had a blast boogie boarding and playing at the playground. A huge thanks to Canterbury Sports Foundation for their Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa grant, which provided brand-new wetsuits, life jackets, and boogie boards, among other outdoor equipment.

A highlight for many was the Antarctic 3D VR experience. Adelma from the Antarctic Heritage Trust came to Cholmondeley during our Intermediate Girls Weekend to lead an immersive adventure where tamariki fed penguins and huskies, rode a hot air balloon over Antarctica, stood next to life-sized emperor penguins, and explored the Antarctic landscape and wildlife. It was a unique, educational experience bringing the stories of Robert Falcon Scott and Scott Base to life.

Kind regards,
The Cholmondeley Team

Cholmondeley Turns 101!

On March 7, we celebrated a very special milestone at Cholmondeley, our 101st birthday.

The day began with a lovely morning tea shared by our tamariki and staff, filled with laughter and plenty of delicious treats. It was wonderful to come together as a community and reflect on over a century of supporting children and families in Canterbury.

To make the most of the last days of summer, we also enjoyed a fun-filled beach day. Tamariki soaked up the sunshine and splashed in the waves. It was a perfect way to mark such an important occasion.

Here’s to another year of supporting and playing an important part in the lives of the children who make Cholmondeley so special.

Celebrating Janine Morrell-Gunn

Recently, we had the privilege of celebrating and thanking Janine Morrell-Gunn for her extraordinary contribution to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.

Over 11 years of dedicated service, Janine has played a significant role in shaping Cholmondeley into what it is today. Serving as both a Trustee and Board Chair, she has helped guide the organisation, while also supporting major fundraising successes. Her impact has been both strategic and deeply personal.

What has always stood out most is Janine’s genuine care for the children. At her farewell, she took the time to speak directly to them, reminding them that they are “the stars of the show” and encouraging them to dream big, believe in themselves, and know they are surrounded by people who care deeply for them.

Thanks also to her husband Jason, who has been involved in many events and is always helping to keep Cholmondeley at the forefront of the community’s mind. He has also been instrumental in promoting and sharing our work at both Cholmondeley and other community events.

Cholmondeley Street Appeal – Thank you!

What an incredible couple of days. On Friday 27 and Saturday 28, the generosity shown during the Cholmondeley Street Appeal went above and beyond our expectations. Cantabrians stepped up to support tamariki in need, even in challenging times with the recent economic pressures and fuel crisis. Every donation helps provide a safe, nurturing space for children when their whānau need it most.

We also want to give a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers. With costs higher than ever just to get to collection points, the gift of their time and energy meant so much to us and the tamariki we support.

For those who did not get a chance to donate over the weekend, there is still time to make a difference. You can donate here www.cholmondeley.org.nz/donate

Thank you Christchurch for your generosity, smiles, and support

Tamariki in Action – Bringing Art to the Community

You may remember from last month’s update that Cholmondeley was chosen to take part in the Christchurch City Council Cabinet Beautification Project. This month, Nat, our lead teacher, has selected the paints, which Mel Hillier from the Council’s Community Support and Partnerships team has kindly delivered. Nat and the tamariki have been busy working on a design and have now begun bringing it to life on the Waterways council cabinet next to the Governors Bay jetty.

Mel has loved seeing the tamariki get involved, giving back to their community while helping to beautify their local surroundings.

If you're in the area, be sure to come check out the progress.
