October 2025

Term 4 is in full swing, and as the days get longer and the weather warms up, our tamariki have been making the very most of it! There have been plenty of beach adventures down at Taylor’s Mistake, collecting shells, feeling the sand between their toes, and cooling off with a splash in the waves.

Back at the Centre, the spring fun has continued with outdoor games, water play, and the ever-popular slip ’n’ slide, made extra slippery with a good dose of detergent and plenty of laughter! These carefree moments are such a big part of what makes Cholmondeley special. They help our tamariki build friendships, confidence, and happy memories that last long after their stay.

The new basket swing has also become a firm favourite. There’s rarely a moment when it’s not in use!

At Cholmondeley, we know that play is more than just fun. It’s essential. Through play, tamariki learn, grow, and make sense of the world around them. It supports their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development, helping them build confidence, problem-solve, and connect with others.

Play also offers our kaimahi precious opportunities to engage deeply with children, strengthening relationships and creating moments of laughter, trust, and discovery. Whether it’s swinging high, splashing in the water, or playing tag, every moment of play at Cholmondeley is a moment of learning and joy.

It’s been a wonderful start to the term, filled with sunshine, smiles, and the simple joys of childhood, just as it should be.

This is my last update as I finish up my time in this role on Show Day after hosting a visit by the Minister for Children, Karen Chhour. I am very pleased to advise that Operations Manager, Katie McCullough, will be Acting General Manager until a permanent appointment is made. Katie is a great leader for Cholmondeley who has proven herself very capable. I know Cholmondeley supporters will wish Katie well in this role and support her to achieve great things. Thank you for my time.

Kind regards,
Darel Hall
General Manager

Buddle Findlay Week of Care

This month we had the pleasure of hosting the Buddle Findlay team for their inaugural Week of Care, an initiative aimed at giving back to communities that support children's wellbeing.

The team dove right in, bringing energy and enthusiasm to Cholmondeley. They spent time crafting, cooking, playing on the swings and trampoline and connecting with our tamariki, filling the place with laughter as the children proudly displayed their handmade creations.

In the kitchen, the Buddle Findlay team worked alongside the children, decorating cupcakes together. The shared moments sparked some wonderful conversations and plenty of creativity.

We are deeply grateful to Buddle Findlay for their continued support through the Buddle Findlay Child Health Foundation. Their involvement during the Week of Care was a meaningful experience, and the memories created during their visit will be cherished by both our children and staff.

Our Very Own Westfield Local Hero: René Heyde

We're thrilled to share that our incredible friend and supporter René Heyde has been named a Westfield Riccarton Local Hero 2025!

René’s journey with Cholmondeley began more than 60 years ago when, as a young boy, he spent time at Cholmondeley. Those early memories left a lasting impression, and last year René decided he wanted to give back in a truly remarkable way, by cycling 3,800 kilometres across Australia to raise funds and awareness for the tamariki and whānau we support.

Over 36 days, through wind, heat and everything in between, René pedalled every single day. A feat that would challenge even the fittest of athletes. His determination, kindness and deep connection to Cholmondeley captured the hearts of people across Aotearoa.

Thanks to the wonderful support from our community and the team at Westfield Riccarton, René has now been officially recognised. His win comes with a $20,000 grant to support the children and families who come to Cholmondeley, a gift that will make a lasting difference.

We couldn’t be prouder. René, you truly embody the spirit of compassion, resilience and community that has kept Cholmondeley thriving for 100 years.

A heartfelt thank you also to Westfield Riccarton for celebrating local heroes and to all the other amazing charities recognised in this year’s awards, your mahi is inspiring, and together we’re making Canterbury an even kinder place to call home.

A Circle of Care: Lisa’s Story

In the late 1970s and early 80s, Lisa and her three brothers spent time at Cholmondeley. Their mum, who had her first child at just 15, was a loving and devoted parent and, like so many parents, needed respite every now and again. For Lisa, coming to Cholmondeley meant something special. It was a place where she and her brothers could be together. While they were sometimes separated into other homes for care, Cholmondeley was the place that brought them back to one another.

Lisa remembers her childhood as full of adventure and connection with her brothers. She speaks fondly of exploring the creek to collect tadpoles and climbing trees with her brothers. There was time spent outdoors at Cholmondeley, walking among the beautiful Governors Bay surrounds and waving little flags as the Queen’s ship passed by. These small moments of joy have stayed with her.

What stands out most for Lisa is the sense of safety she felt here. Growing up, she had learned to understand the difference between safe and unsafe spaces, and Cholmondeley was a place where she felt protected. She recalls the kindness of staff, who showed care through small gestures, like the warmth when she was discovered sneaking cookies from the kitchen late at night. Instead of being scolded, she was met with understanding and softness, a memory that still makes her smile.

There were routines, shared meals, and a sense of togetherness that stayed with her. She especially remembers the food, including morning tea, afternoon tea, supper, and everything in between.

When Lisa became a mother herself, she carried with her a deep appreciation for what Cholmondeley had provided her family. She understood the strength it takes to ask for help and the peace that comes from knowing your children are safe and nurtured. Her own children later came to Cholmondeley for a short time.

Today, Lisa’s life is full. She works and studies full time through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, volunteers in her community, and is deeply present in the lives of her children and mokopuna. She has a strong interest in rongoā Māori, natural healing, and wellbeing, and continues to nurture that connection.

Lisa’s story reminds us of the heart of Cholmondeley. For 100 years, our community has supported families to stay strong, connected, and well. It is a story of love, resilience, and the power of a place where children can simply be children together.
